The candidate arrives at the town hall with muddy feet, greets three people before reaching the platform and immediately investigates the refreshments. The campaign manager calls it excellent public engagement. The cleaner has another description.
This is a fictional election, with no real parties, politicians or claims that a breed's personality is fixed. Any dog may audition. The only disqualifying offence is eating the ballot papers before the votes are counted.
The candidate everyone knows
A sociable retriever starts with a strong advantage: every doorstep is a potential friendship. The promise is simple—more walks, longer walks and a small snack after each walk. Asked how the programme will be funded, the candidate presents a tennis ball and hopes the question has been answered.
The public likes the enthusiasm. The treasurer requests a second meeting without the ball.
The committee specialist
A keen herding dog proposes a detailed schedule for the entire neighbourhood. Morning exercise begins promptly. Straying from the agenda will be discouraged. Anyone leaving the meeting early may find themselves politely redirected to their seat.
The plan is impressively organised. It needs one amendment: residents are allowed to choose a quiet afternoon without being rounded up for community activities.
The independent voice
A terrier announces that the previous administration has neglected several important holes in the park. A thorough investigation is promised, beginning immediately and continuing until somebody says the flowerbed is off limits.
This candidate is difficult to distract from a chosen issue. Unfortunately, the chosen issue has just disappeared under the garden shed, and the debate will have to wait.
The consensus candidate
An older mixed-breed dog offers a shorter speech. There will be somewhere comfortable to rest, enough time to sniff on walks and fewer unnecessary arguments near the food bowl. Meetings will end before everyone becomes tired and irritable.
The proposal is modest. Several voters quietly admit it sounds rather good.
The amendment people have to write
A town designed entirely around dogs would still need people to handle the details: clean shared spaces, considerate leads, quiet hours and room for residents who do not want an enthusiastic greeting.
That is where the joke becomes useful. Affection for dogs works best when it includes consideration for everybody around them. The winning candidate may promise unlimited biscuits, but a responsible owner will still check the portion, pick up after the walk and let the neighbours get some sleep.
The election ends with no hard feelings. Somebody throws the campaign ball, and all parties briefly agree on the next priority.
