A swirl of pink and blue can brighten up a very muddy dog walk. The trick is choosing something you will still want to use after the photograph: a comfortable lead, a washable cover or a pouch that keeps treats out of your coat pockets.
This is a style guide, not a tested product ranking. There are no must-buy brands here. Start with the job an accessory needs to do, then choose the colour.
Put the pattern on something useful
A patterned lead is an easy option because it adds colour without dressing your dog in another layer. Look at the handle, stitching and clip before the print. A lovely pattern will not make a stiff handle more pleasant to hold in the rain.
A removable bed cover can work well too. Check its actual washing instructions and whether replacement covers are available. Think about your household: pale yellow might look cheerful online, but a darker mixed pattern may be a more forgiving choice beside the garden door.
Other places for colour include your own treat bag, a washable mat beneath water bowls or a bag used for dog-walking supplies. Your dog does not have to wear the trend for you to enjoy it.
Check fit without relying on the photograph
For collars and harnesses, use the maker's measurement guide. Compare measurements rather than assuming that “medium” means the same thing across brands. Keep packaging until you have checked the fit at home and confirmed the returns policy.
Watch your dog move, turn and lie down. Hardware should not dig into them, and straps should not rub behind the front legs. If an item is awkward to adjust or easy to slip out of, choose another design.
Skip the extra outfit
Bright colours do not require hats, dangling decorations or a full costume. PDSA advises avoiding pet clothing that has no practical comfort or safety purpose. Useful coats are a different question from dressing a dog up purely for a picture.
If your dog freezes, paws at an accessory or tries to remove it, take it off. A relaxed dog beside a colourful blanket makes a better photograph than an uncomfortable dog wearing one.
Ask what the finish is meant to withstand
Will the lead be dragged through wet grass? Does the cover need frequent hot washing? Read the care label with those habits in mind. Product photos rarely show how an item looks after repeated cleaning.
For a home craft project, colour your own walking bag or a spare cover instead of applying craft dyes to your dog. Follow the dye manufacturer's instructions, including rinsing and drying, and keep materials away from pets.
Choose one thing you will actually use
A matching collection can become an expensive drawer of spares. If your current equipment works well, there is no need to replace it. One washable accessory is enough to add the colour you wanted, and a clean old lead is still a perfectly good lead.
