Jax’s Farewell Came After a Long Wait at Regina Humane Society

Staff at Regina Humane Society gathered to see Jax leave with his adopter on March 3, 2023. Before reaching his new person, he greeted the people along the way, creating the farewell that later travelled widely online.

In The Dodo's interview with shelter director Bill Thorn, Jax's long wait was linked partly to how he behaved behind his kennel barrier. Staff had also given him time in reception, where visitors could meet him differently.

The goodbye is an appealing ending, but it is only the visible final moment of an adoption. The less photogenic work includes understanding a dog, talking with potential adopters and creating opportunities for a suitable meeting. Those details are easy to lose when a story is reduced to a few seconds of affection.

It is tempting to translate every movement into a sentence of gratitude. We do not need to do that to appreciate the scene. The people had cared for Jax, they were there when he left, and the dog interacted with them before departing.

This is a look back at an adoption that took place in 2023, not a current appeal for Jax. Anyone inspired by the farewell can ask a local shelter about the dogs currently in its care, including those who may need a more considered introduction than a glance through a kennel door.
