Meech is a Bullmastiff whose preferred seat sometimes appears to be his owner. In a September 2026 feature, The Dodo spoke with Dorit about life with the dog, described in the publisher's account as weighing 160 pounds.
The attraction is the mismatch between his considerable size and his enthusiasm for close company. Calling him a dog who does not know he is big is an affectionate joke, rather than a conclusion about canine self-awareness. What the account supports is simpler: Meech enjoys getting very close to his person.
One dog's personality is the story
A friendly household feature can show an individual beautifully without representing every member of a breed. Meech's behaviour should not become a promise that any Bullmastiff will greet visitors the same way, enjoy the same handling or fit the same household.
Prospective owners need to meet individual dogs and consider practical requirements. Space is only one of them. Transport, veterinary care, handling strength and a plan for helping the dog if mobility changes also belong in the decision.
Make affection comfortable for everyone
A dog does not need to sit on a person's chest to share a quiet evening. A bed alongside the sofa or a comfortable place near a chair can offer closeness with less pressure on the person. Teaching a clear invitation and a way to move away gives both companions options.
Visitors should be allowed to choose how much contact they want. Someone who likes dogs may still be unsteady, recovering from surgery or uncomfortable under a very large animal. Good household arrangements make room for that without treating the dog as unfriendly.
Enjoy the ordinary relationship
The strongest part of Meech's feature is the everyday familiarity between dog and owner. It does not require a dramatic rescue claim, a breed ranking or a guess at what he thinks about his own size.
For people who live with large dogs, the scene may feel recognisable: a familiar face at close range, a rearranged cushion and a little less room than expected. The sensible version of that companionship gives the dog somewhere comfortable, gives the person a choice and leaves the joke where it belongs—in the affectionate telling of one household's life.
