After more than two weeks in intensive care, Valdir Zabel had a visitor he had been missing: his dog, Preta. Hospital de Gaspar in Santa Catarina, Brazil, arranged their meeting on September 7, 2024.
TV Gaspar's local account identified the patient as a 73-year-old resident of Arraial D'Ouro and described how a psychologist named Lucimara suggested the visit. The meeting took place outside the hospital after staff coordinated the arrangements.
SCC10's reporting, quoting the institution, described cooperation among clinical staff and infection-control personnel. The visit was part of an organised approach to the patient's wellbeing, not an animal being brought into intensive care without permission.
A reunion is not proof of a cure
The local report said Zabel left intensive care on September 11. That timing is part of the account, but it does not establish that seeing Preta caused his medical improvement. Treatment, clinical decisions and recovery cannot be reduced to a single emotional moment.
The scene is meaningful without making that leap. A team recognised how much an animal mattered to a patient and found a way to bring them together. The planning behind the meeting is as important as the resulting embrace.

Families reading about a hospital reunion may naturally wonder whether something similar could help someone they love. The starting point is a conversation with the treating team. A moving video does not tell us what another patient's circumstances or hospital rules allow.
Valdir and Preta's meeting remains a specific event in September 2024. Its strongest detail is not a promise that affection can replace medicine, but the care taken to include a familiar companion in a difficult period of a person's life.
